Below is a list of Thundereggs Offered for sale by Hinkle's Rock Shop
Welcome to Hinkle's Rock Shop Thundereggs page. Here is a listing of several types of Oregon Thundereggs and Thundereggs from other localities in the world. Due to limited specimens on hand and the rarity of certain specimens not all Thundereggs listed will be in stock at the time of purchase. I update my website within hours of orders thus stating if specimens are sold. Usually the specimens listed with prices are still in stock are are offered for sale.
My Thunderegg stock is always rotating, However I try and maintain between 100-200 cut and polished specimens to choose from. So if you don't see a specimen that fits your special taste, please email me with what your looking for and I'll see if I can find something that may interest you.

Information about Ochoco National Forest
Click here for ~ Ochoco National Forest Information
Situated in the heart of Oregon, the Ochoco's 1,500 square miles is a beguiling landscape of vertiginous rimrock, abysmal canyons, geologic oddities, dense pine forests, and high desert terrain. Modern-day explorers and outdoor adventurers can also wander the vast steppe of sagebrush and crooked juniper in the Crooked River National Grassland, also administered by the forest.
The Ochoco is yet another forest that owes its existence to Teddy Roosevelt it was part of the old Blue Mountain Forest Reserve established back in 1906. The Ochoco eventually emerged as its own independent national forest in 1911. Congress created the Crooked River National Grassland in 1960.

H2L Thundereggs

My Main dig at H2L
H2L Thundereggs is a small deposit we discovered in the Summer of 2004. H2L Thunderegg bed is owned and operated by Hinkle's Rock Shop. The Thundereggs are located High in the Ochoco Mountains North East of Prineville, Oregon. To protect the location and keep the exclusive rights to these Eggs I will not release any more details on where this new deposit is located. |

SPECIMEN LISTED 1-20-10
Here's a rare specimen. This is a very small Precious Opal filled Thunderegg from my personal mine. This specimen is one of very few localities in the state of Oregon which produce Precious Opal. This specimen is about 70% Matrix and 30% Opal. This is a SPECIMEN OPAL and needs to be kept in water. These opals are highly unstable and will crack and craze when left to dry out. This is a very flashy/fiery piece.

Desolation Canyon Thundereggs

Looking into the mouth of Desolation Canyon - Twin Pillars in the center.
Desolation Canyon Thundereggs contain a mixture of Thundereggs from 11 different claims a man named Taber Hall once owned. Due to the creation of the Mill Creek Wilderness area, these eggs are no longer open for collecting. Before the Taber Hall collection was purchased by Yellow Dog Rocks, the papers regarding these mines were destroyed by family members, so no one knows any details on which eggs originated from which claims. |

SPECIMEN LISTED 1-30-10
Here's an interesting item. This came from a large Desolation Canyon Egg I had. These were broken tubes inside the egg. I have taken them and polished small windows in the ends. This is also active under short wave light.

| Lucky Strike Mine
The Lucky Strike Mine is located high in the Ochoco Mt's of Central Oregon. This is one of very few pay-to-dig places left in the State. I have to admit that this is one of my favorite place to visit!. Spending time with great people and digging fantastic specimens of Thundereggs make any vacation worth its weight in gold to this area. If you don't have the energy to dig your own material then they usually have plenty of rough piled up nearby the cabin.

Valley View Mine
The Valley View Mine is located high in the Ochoco Mt's of Central Oregon. This is one of very few pay-to-dig places left in the State. Its also what I call the sister mine to the Lucky Strike Mine. I've only cut a few eggs from this spot and the ones I have cut seemed to be pretty nice eggs. I know the owners have plans to really open this mine up to expose some better material and I wish them the best of luck with the venture! |

Whistler Springs
This is an area that is set aside for public collecting free of charge. This claim is held by the Crook County Chamber of Commerce. This area has several area's for collecting, however there is two well known area's.
First is the "upper bed" This is located by the new outhouse and has larger specimens which are in a very hard packed host material. These eggs have agate cores, but many seem to contain thin agate cores.
The Second bed is the "Lower Bed", also known as the Field Area. As you enter the lower area you'll see many holes in the ground. The eggs seem to be in the top couple feet of topsoil.
These are smaller specimens, but usually have nice black agate cores.

Rojo Di Mine
The Rojo Di is a private claim owned by a good friend of mine. The claim is located within a mile or two of Lucky Strike and Valley View Mine's. These eggs look like your typical coarse grained "Ochoco Eggs" such as Lucky Strikes, or Desolation Canyon Eggs, however they tend to have a much wider variety of color in the matrix and agate cores. I have seen a half dozen eggs come from the same area of the mine, but yet you'd guess they came from different mines.
I'm fairly new to cutting and polishing these eggs, but they are moving up quickly on my favorites list!
I'm currently the exclusive dealer for these Thundereggs (besides the owner). My Inventory is limited at times, but I'm working with the owner to continue bringing me quality specimens.

Now this is how you dig Thundereggs! ~ Having fun at the Rojo Di |

The Radford Mine is past the Whistler Springs area a short ways on the 27 Road. At one time this claim was commercially worked with heavy equipment and
specimens are currently found within the tailings of the claim. The Radford Eggs are hard work to locate, but one can be nicely rewarded with quality agate. |

Another fine example from Radfords pit. This is a flat/thin torpedo style egg. Very nice fortification agate center with a nice burst of moss.

Ochoco Agate Bed

Looking into the many digs at Ochoco Agate Bed
Currently owned by the Mt. Hood Rock Club from Portland, Oregon area. This is also known as the "Old Viewpoint", or "TVGC Claim".
It's changed ownership many times over the years. Permission must be granted to collect here. These eggs have a course grained matrix just like many Ochoco Eggs, the agate cores tend to be clear, to light blue, to carnelian agate centers being the top gem. |

Here's a nice, simple looking Ochoco Agate Bed Specimen. This came from my personal collection. Clear based agate with a hollow pocket and a hint of white opal in the center.
Measures - 2-3/4" x 3"

Star Boy
Starboy was a private claim held by two friends of mine for a short while. These eggs tend to be very much like White Fir Spring specimens. The quality tends to be better than the White Fir Beds as well.
|

Well here's the first Star Boy. As you can see they look very much like a White Fir Springs "Stringer Bed". This is a fair looking stone - the agate core has gray colored fortification agate with two small quartz pockets and a larger area of yellow colored opalite material.

White Fir Springs - The Agate bed is actually a private mined owned by a husband and wife in Bend, Oregon. Many people disrespect this and dig this claim as if it was open to the public. The Agate Bed, at one time was claimed as the "Stringer Bed" this name tends to be a common name used for the specimens. |
|
White Fir Springs "Jasper Bed"
White Fir Springs "Jasper Bed". This is a claim owned by the Crook County Chamber of Commerce. The area is set aside for public collecting for free Thundereggs. Eggs tend to run about baseball size, however much larger specimens are not all that uncommon.

The eggs in this bed are usually smaller in sized, 3" and smaller. The cores have many varieties, however shadow agate is top gem in this claim. |

Here's a fair quality Queens point. This has a nice triconoid core with fortification agate and a interior center of quartz. It does have a few minor fractures, but overall a nice egg.

T&T Bed

My hole at T&T
T&T Bed was a re-discovered bed a couple years ago. Eggs here are plentiful, but one must collect many specimens to cut quality collection pieces. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the T&T Locality... It's easy digging and eggs pretty much roll out of the ground. But one must cut egg upon egg to find a good one! The majority of these eggs are quartz with a ton of fractures! |

Here's a fairly nice T&T... This one has a triconoid core with quartz and even has a pinkish/red colored outline around the quartz. Not too shabby at all!

White Rock Springs

"Surface collecting" in White Rock (Remember No Digging allowed!)
White Rock Springs is one of the most historic collecting sites in the Ochoco's. Tons of Eggs were taken from this bed before the creation of the Mill Creek Wilderness area. I've personally hiked into this bed to take photo's and I am amazed how the Wilderness Boundary "curves" around this bed to make it illegal to collect here.
Even though you can't collect here, a nice campground is available

Fallen Tree

Main Pit at Fallen Tree
Fallen Tree like many egg beds has a long history. It was first discovered by "Kop" who owns the Lucky Strike Mine. It has since changed ownership many times and is now owned and operated by Hinkle's Rock Shop. This locality has a wide variety of Thundereggs. Many colors of Agate cores, however the more common variety produced here is Hollow cores filled with various zeolite minerals.

Killer Green Bed
Digging on the steep slope of Killer Green
Killer Green was found several years ago by a good friend of mine and his son. I'm grateful to be the very first person to collect this spot along with them. Since then, people have discovered our dig and work spread like wildfire about this bed. It is now owned and operated by Hinkle's Rock Shop. Again this Bed produces a dark green matrix, with many types of cores structures. I have seen Agate, Quartz, Zeolites and my most favorite is the Amethyst Cores. |

The Owners of this mine only sell cut and polished Thundereggs to dealers one time a year. So these eggs have very limited numbers.

Friends Ranch main pit. Ashwood Rockstock 2007
Friends Ranch is located just outside of Ashwood, Oregon. This is a pay-to-dig ranch that opens a couple times a year for the public. I have to admit I really enjoy this place. From my last visit to the Friends Ranch this year, I was able to collect a few specimens from a "new" little hole on the property. Richardson's Ranch

Inside one of Richardson's many beds
A very well known locality and good friends of mine, Richardson's Ranch is a pay-to-dig locality that has been open for years. Visit one of many beds on this ranch set-aside for people to prospect - it's worth the time. At this locality you are certain to bring home Thundereggs.
Please understand with all Private Ranches these owners offer collecting on their property for us as a privilege. Too many people now days have no respect for this and feel they can do what-ever they want while visiting these ranches. Behavior such as this is what forces people to close areas and ruin it for everyone. This ranch is one of the last remaining places open for digging on private property and the family has been more than kind to keep it that way.
Richardson's called me to pass along the information that as of 10/28/09 there is NO MORE CAMPING on the ranch property. So be sure to check around the area for future campsites while your digging.
